Fitzgerald’s Park

fun places to visit in Cork

Fitzgerald Park home to Cork Public Museum on the Mardyke is just a short distance from Cork City centre, University College Cork and is one of the fun places to visit in Cork. Fitzgerald’s Park where the visitor and local alike can enjoy a riverside on the banks of the river Lee.

There are many sculptures in Fitzgerald’s Park one of the sculptures is of Michael Collins by Seamus Murphy. Fitzgerald’s Park is a quiet haven, which has a playground for the children and a cafe to enjoy the view of the river Lee and across to the gardens and houses of the Sunday’s Well area.

Fitzgerald’s Park named after a previous Lord Mayor of Cork in 1901, Edward Fitzgerald, offers a quite retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city, with its beautiful tree lined avenues, brimming flower beds and rose garden to its many statues and sculptures and the large central fountain, this 18 acre park is a wonderful treat

Just a short walk across the road on one side is University College Cork (UCC) and across the river on Daly’s Bridge (The Shakey Bridge) on Sunday’s Well area you will find the old Cork City Gaol. Just above Fitzgerald’s Park is the area around the Mardyke and here you will see the new Mardyke bridge and this lovely riverside walk. Just past Fitzgerald Park on the Mardyke Walk a skate park has been provided. Fitzgerald skatepark is great for learning the basics as it is a small back and forth concrete skatepark. Another reason why Fitzgerald’s Park is one of the top fun places to visit in Cork.

If you walk a little further, continue through the park and exit by the Shakey bridge heading west in the direction of the Carrighrohane road, you will see the Cork County Hall on your left.

Dermot Gavin’s Sky Garden won a gold medal at prestigious Chelsea Flower Show in 2011. It was then transported to Cork City and is currently on display in Fitzgerald Park. It originally included a sky pod centrepiece hanging from a crane some 30 metres above the ground. But in it’s new home it will remain on the ground.
